Welcome to my publications page. Papers I haven’t uploaded here can often be downloaded through my profile on Google Scholar Citations or through Research Gate.

My research is organised in several research lines. First, I develop network applications in the context of psychometric modelling. This line of research revolves around the idea that many psychological constructs can be modeled as complex networks of interacting variables. A paper that reviews the techniques we have developed to estimate and analyse such networks is here and further work is collected on the Psychosystems Project page, which also holds relevant links to data and analysis code. Second, I develop methods to facilitate theory formation. The idea behind this research line is that theory construction is a systematic scientific process that can be organised into a coherent methodological framework. A paper that introduces this kind of theory construction methodology is here and further work on this topic is organised in the Theory Methods Lab. Third, I develop theories of psychological phenomena in areas like psychopathology, attitudes, and personality, often in collaboration with substantive experts. An example is the network theory of mental disorders, which holds that mental disorders arise out of interactions between symptoms. Finally, I work on the conceptual analysis of psychological and psychometric theories, especially in the areas of measurement theory. This research line applies ideas and theories that have been developed in the philosophy of science to psychometric problems. An example from this line of research is my analysis of test validity, which holds that validity should be defined in terms of a causal relation between a targeted attribute and observed test scores.
